UI component edits for mobile app

Project description:

 

The client provided UI copy (approximately 2000 words) for an outdoor rock climbing app they wanted to expand globally. The copy was translated from Finnish and edited by a nonnative English speaker. My job was to review and edit the copy for consistency, clarity, and localization. But, I was not given many screenshots or context for when and where the copy would appear when using the app. I was given a 3-day turnaround time.

My research:

​

  • I downloaded the app to familiarize myself with the brand and app features.

  • I researched online reviews of the app and found the website the app is based on.

  • I reviewed the copy on the website to identify the brand voice.

  • I looked at competitor apps to compare word choices the were specific to the target users.

  • I reached out to a few outdoor rock climbers to A/B test copy.

 

What I did:

 

  • I created consistency between the app and the website for casing, word choice, punctuation, voice, and tone.

  • I adjusted some language for clarity.

  • I suggested creating a style guide as a reference to maintain consistency for future copy.

App description edits

Project description:

 

After delivering the UI edits for the outdoor climbing app, I was asked to edit the description for the app, which would appear in the app store. The original copy was approximately 340 words and the word limitations were to either maintain or decrease the length. The client specified that the edits should be for US English, and I was given a 2-day turnaround time.

My research:

 

  • I reviewed the app and website again, focusing on brand voice and wording of key features.

  • I looked at app store descriptions to see what distinguishing features could be highlighted.

What I did:

 

  • I eliminated repetition. 

  • I added parallel structure and bullet points.

  • I reorganized the order of some of the information for flow and consistency.

  • I reworded some of the copy to reflect the brand voice and make it a bit more conversational.

  • I was able to reduce the copy to 300 words.
